Colorscapes:
My need to express is like a bird flapping around inside me. Painting, asemics, and poetry are how I let that bird out to fly into the world. Or at least fly out of me onto the page. I am deeply influenced by the Vermont landscape where I live, by the organic forms of rocks, and the natural form of rivers, as well as the layered mountains. I love the look of the distressed and deteriorating, be it wall, door, the patina on copper, slate, these things make my heart sing and I use these components in my works. The paintings in this color-scape series are studies in texture, color, and introspection. I’m working with the idea of horizon, which is a continuing exploration. I’m interested in the concepts of the above and below, sky and earth, outer and inner, and how they interplay with each other. In the chaos of the world, I strive to create a calm place, a sense of stillness, a place where feeling can open and be experienced. My work explores how textures, which echo the intricacies of the natural world, and layered colors, can evoke emotions and elicit a response from the viewer. I strive to create works that resonates with the viewer on a level which allows the viewer to delve into their own inner world. In this way the work becomes a call and response. |
